Shark Bite Surgery
We appreciate this is an extremely generous Christmas present — so, thank you. There’s nothing quite like the gift of life. Especially when it’s an extremely rare, endangered species, like the yellow-eyed penguin. Unfortunately, we have to treat a lot of shark bites, plus a fair few nibbles from barracoutas. Most of the surgery we perform truly is life-saving.
Penguins are our core business, with more than 1000 coming through our doors since 2018. Most of these have been the very rare yellow-eyed penguin, as well as Fiordland-crested, erect-crested, snares-crested and little blue penguins. Predator injuries are the most common thing we deal with, so over the summer, we’re very much Penguin ER. Fortunately, we’re very good trauma surgeons, with an extremely high success rate.
